Motto: […]

Lisa was a head chef at a busy downtown restaurant in Vancouver, BC. She left the money to serve for the community as an assistant food service manager. She’s one of those people who is liked by everyone. A very diplomatic person and just knows how to play the cards right. She’s also a tattoo artist and provides tattoo services in her free time, plays the guitar, and has a daughter attending university and a son as a pilot.

Lead By Example

Motto: Never give up.

An SFU graduate with a Masters in Psychology. He was the weekend team lead when I was working at a homeless shelter. At first, I didn’t know what to expect when I heard he was going to be the team lead for the location I was working at, but I discovered that we had a common interest, basketball, and he was pretty cool too. He made me feel like I was working with a friend and not a boss. I asked him what his ultimate goal was in terms of an occupation because someone like him was definitely overqualified to be just a team lead. He told me that he wanted to be a counselor for the youth. He’s also a very unbiased and patient person. He’s the type that would step back and avoid gossip and rumours about people and would actually talk to them instead. During our time working together, even with the most mentally ill guests, he would take his time and talk to them and explain things to them in a very professional and compassionate manner.

Therapist In Disguise

Motto: Nothing is permanent, everything always changes.

Another coworker that I enjoyed working with and a pleasure to have met in my life. 70 years young. The first thing that stood out for me when I started working with her was that she’s excellent with people. You know on certain job descriptions where it says ‘Must be excellent in verbal communication and interpersonal skills’? She is the epitome of that.

I’ve seen homeless people come into the dining area and they’re not looking for anything to eat, instead they just want to talk to Leanne because she makes them feel like they belong. I jokingly said to her that she should create a therapy list and have people sign up to talk to her because she’s that good with people. I’ve also noticed volunteers come back to volunteer because she makes the experience so enjoyable.

Life Of The Party

Motto: […]

One of my favourite coworkers when I was working at a homeless shelter. A kitchen staff and a single father that played a vital role in helping prep breakfast and lunch for the unfortunate people in the community. Great personality, very funny, yet a little inconsiderate at times. I told him that he was capable of being a stand up comedian because of the way he would tell his funny stories. He reminded me of the actor Ben Stiller in terms of his communication and humour.

Despite his positives, the negatives weren’t easy to ignore due to his troubling past with drugs and relationships with his brother and ex. I hope his daughter goes off and does special things in her life. The way how he would talk about his daughter makes it seem like she’s going to be a university student one day.

Quran

Motto: I live by Quran, the final words of god, and a way to live by.

I was just relaxing at the park when I heard someone singing Middle Eastern music on the opposite side of the gravel field. It actually wasn’t singing, but reading out loud. I learned that Waleed was reading a religious text of the Quran.

Red Haired Esthetician

Motto: Laugh now, cry later.

Saw her across the street. Nice little chat. I didn’t ask what her profession was, but based on her outfit and how she was standing next to a skincare shop, it was likely her profession.

Like Mother, Like Daughter

Credits: Rekha G. and her daughter.

Picture taken: May, 4th, 2023

Motto: “Stop wars and live in peace.”

Rekha and her daughter were kind enough to let me capture this moment. The young one has plenty of supportive people in her life like her mom. A bright young mind by the way how she carries herself at an early age, her parents will be extremely proud of her in the future.
